Season Ends Early for Sophie Cunningham of Fever Due to Injury
Indiana Fever Face Challenges with Sophie Cunningham's Injury and Upcoming Match against Minnesota Lynx
The Indiana Fever are facing a significant setback as star player Sophie Cunningham has been diagnosed with a season-ending knee ailment. Cunningham, who has been an Indiana fan favourite for her defensive work and contributions off the bench, sustained the injury during a physical encounter with Bria Hartley.
Cunningham's injury comes at a crucial time for the Fever, who are currently holding the sixth spot on the WNBA playoff bracket with a record of 19-16. Despite the setback, the team is 2.5 games ahead of Los Angeles and Washington, the first teams out. However, they are two games behind Phoenix for the fourth seed.
To fill the void left by Cunningham, the Fever has signed veteran guard Shey Peddy to a hardship contract. Peddy, 36, played six games for the Los Angeles Sparks earlier this season. The team released Kyra Lamber to make room for Peddy.
The Fever's most recurring foe has struck again, and they will face a home-and-home against the league-leading Minnesota Lynx, starting on Friday in Indianapolis. This will be the first time the two sides square off since the Clark-less Fever prevailed in the Commissioner's Cup Final on July 1.
Cunningham's Fever debut ended with averages of 8.6 points and 3.5 rebounds. In her first year in Indianapolis, Cunningham made 46.9% of her field goals, a career best.
