WSOP 2025 News: Dreamlike Main Event enlivens a bustling Day 1D
The 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event has set a new record, attracting over 10,000 players in its opening rounds. This impressive turnout surpasses the 2025 event, which had 9,735 total entrants and ranks as the third-largest in history.
With four opening rounds, it is estimated that each round saw around 2,500 to 3,000 players, assuming a roughly even distribution across flights. As of Saturday, the total number of players in the tournament stands at approximately 8,788, with over 3,800 players taking a day off and returning on Monday.
One of the players to watch is Shaun Deeb, who has been in the spotlight throughout the tournament. Deeb, a contender for the Player of the Year title, claimed the lead this week with his win in the $100K PLO High Roller. He is still in the hunt for a bracelet in a late-night/early-morning event on Sunday.
Other notable players include Riva Arthur, presumptive chip leader, who has a long list of cashes from the East Coast grind and has already won a $1,100 event at Aria in June. Cary Katz, PokerGO's very own, is also in the final four of the $2,500 Freezeout, potentially earning his first bracelet.
WSOP mainstay Cliff Josephy was among the productive players in Day 1D, and Martin Kabrhel, Benny Glaser, and Scott Bohlman are in pursuit of Deeb for the Player of the Year title.
The tournament has been a spectacle, teasing the 5,000 mark but settling at 4,997 players (barring any late-night corrections). Nearly every inch of space was needed to accommodate the large number of players.
As the tournament progresses, players like Deeb will continue their pursuit of the coveted bracelet, and the race for the Player of the Year title will heat up. Stay tuned for updates as the 2023 WSOP Main Event unfolds.
PokerOrg will join the survivors from the first three flights of the Main Event in returning on Sunday for coverage of Day 2ABC. Meanwhile, two other events, the $2,500 Freezeout and the $1,000 NLH event, are expected to play to a winner this evening, although they may require an extra day if they extend into the very late hours.
The Las Vegas Strip underwent cleaning on Saturday morning, preparing for the continued influx of poker enthusiasts as the WSOP Main Event continues to captivate the poker world.
In the ongoing 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event, poker players from around the globe are flocking to Las Vegas, taking part in casino-games at various casinos-and-gambling establishments along the Las Vegas Strip. With the tournament's large participant pool of over 10,000 players, it's clear that this year's edition is set to be one of the most competitive poker events in recent history.
